Self-Worth

Understanding Self-Doubt, and How You Can Overcome It.

Self-Doubt, a lack of faith in oneself: a feeling of doubt or uncertainty about one’s abilities, actions, etc.  thank you, Merriam-Webster. I would say that sums it up pretty nicely, but while the definition itself is accurate, how each one of us relates to it is a very personal and unique struggle.

The doubt you have about who you are and what you’re capable of can be a daily struggle affecting virtually any aspect of your personal, relational, or professional life. It’s something that’s on your mind from the time you wake up until hit the hay at the end of the day. It makes you doubt everything from your ability to choose a menu item at your favorite restaurant, to figuring out what car you want to buy, and of course…everything in between.

What about relationships? Am I worthy of finding a husband or wife? If I am married, am I able to give them everything they need? The kids, will I be a good parent, how do I do that, what if can’t teach them what they need to know, what if…what if…

And then there’s the whole survivor thing; how can I possibly heal? What if I can’t handle therapy, and for that matter how do I even go about finding a therapist? Do I need a coach, what if they can’t help me either? Self-Care, how in the world do I do that, what if I do it wrong?

I’m sure you get the idea; self-doubt is something that can feel very overwhelming and keep you from ever even trying something new, regardless of how healthy and positive it might be. The good news is, self-doubt is something that is a learned response (just like anxiety) so therefore it is something that can be unlearned.

Joanne and I share some thoughts on self-doubt during this episode of the podcast. Her new book, “Ditch Your Doubt” gives you practical insight into how self-doubt is manifested in your life and ways you can overcome it.

How is self-doubt presenting in your life? Are there strategies you’ve tried that just don’t work? There’s a reason for that; every event in life is a learning experience for your brain. What we teach ourselves, what we’ve been taught (consciously or otherwise), the people we interact with in daily life, it’s all connected and can all foster this mindset of perpetuating self-doubt and feeling stuck.

There is hope, there are ways to work through this and retrain your brain to default to new pathways, new mindsets, and a more positive, authentic outlook on not only who you are, but what your capable of, and the way you see others.

What is Your Self-Worth Based On?

In keeping with the theme of Self-Worth, that we have going right now for June 2019, I wanted to share my thoughts what exactly our self-worth is tied too. It’s an interesting question to ponder if you pause and think about it for a minute. What things in your life are you maybe tieing your worth to as a human being too?

  • Your Job or Career
  • Getting a promotion
  • Achieving a particular goal
  • Being a parent
  • A spouse
  • A hobby
  • Your house, Your Car, Your Possessions…

Insert whatever you want, but when you begin to think about it, take stock of how much you put your well being, your personality, your existence, your purpose, into those things..and how is that serving you? How does that make you feel, how does that inspire you?

How temporary, or volatile are those things…are you always striving to live up to a standard of someone else, and if so, how’s that working out for you?

I share some thoughts on the importance of tying your self-worth, your reason for being on this planet, to only you. Not allowing anyone or anything to dictate who you are, how you should act, where you focus your time, efforts, and resources. Understanding that relationships, hobbies, friendships, careers, possessions, are all well and good, there’s nothing wrong with any of those things, as long as you always know that you are amazing, worthy, capable, and importance just for being you.

The Journey of Self-Confidence and Discovering Your Self-Worth, with Amy Rushworth

Raise your hand if you’ve heard a quote similar to this: “life is about the journey, not the destination”. I believe the first person to coin that phrase was Ralph Waldo Emerson. You’ve probably heard it referenced in books and movies, from motivational speakers, professors, and countless others…but how much do you truly embrace it in your life, particularly in the area of self-confidence and self-worth?

The Journey of Self-Confidence and Discovering Your Self-WorthDuring my chat with Amy Rushworth on this episode of the podcast, we are talking about how self-confidence is born, developed, and honed throughout your life experiences. It’s those experiences that help you find your voice, which is discovered by developing your self-confidence; and your self-confidence is born out of everything you’ve been through in your past, and continues to develop as you live your life.

Amy Rushworth is the UK’s leading Confidence Coach & Transformational Mentor. She helps her clients and those who take her programs, to ignite their confidence, fire up their self-worth, and get their sparkle back.

I’m so passionate about what I do because I have experienced my own ‘confidence crisis’ and mental health rock bottom. Back then, I realized I could no longer fake my way through life anymore. I knew I needed to radically reinvent my confidence. Over the past 5 years, I’ve been on a journey of radical healing, reinventing my life and rebuilding my confidence. My struggles became my greatest gift because they led me to my soul’s calling and helping hundreds of other women to take back control of their lives.

Confidence influences everything from the relationships we call in, the money we manifest, the freedom we experience and the well-being of our mind, body, and soul. When you feel radiantly confident on the inside, your life will change dramatically on the outside. Through my unique confidence-building methodology, many of my clients have gone on to create their dream lives, and for that, I am truly grateful.

During our chat with Amy, you’ll hear how she came to a pivotal point in her life of realizing she needed more out of her life, than what she originally thought. She was checking off the boxes; a wonderful relationship, apartment on the beach, glamorous fashion career, and so on but there was something missing, and her body was beginning to show her this in ways she never expected.

Through some difficult medical circumstances, she was left with plenty of time to reflect, and knew it was time to make a change. She sought the help of a therapist and began evaluating her life and where she was headed; including her priorities. This healing work helped her find the confidence to move to England and start her own business.

Just when things were taking off, she began having flashbacks of childhood trauma and realized there was still more work to be done. She took those experiences, learned from them, and used them as even more motivation to develop her voice and confidence both personally and professionally.

She shares how being in a place of true acceptance and self-love, helps her be in tune with what her body and mind are telling her. We discuss how gratitude opens your heart and rewires your brain, and that rewiring is essential in developing confidence and self-worth. She shares helpful strategies for starting your own gratitude journal and making it a part of your life, every day.

We talk about the importance of getting to the root of limiting beliefs to help change the maladaptive coping skills that hold you back and keep you stuck. You can truly “learn how to unlearn low-confidence and low self-worth”, as Amy shares, which will help ignite your confidence and fire up your self-worth.
